About The Movie Of "Made in China 2019"
Made in China (2019) is an Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film directed by Mikhil Musale. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the movie stars Rajkummar Rao, Mouni Roy, and Boman Irani in key roles. The story revolves around a struggling Gujarati businessman who travels to China to explore new business opportunities, only to return with an unconventional idea that changes his life.
Plot Summary
The film begins with a cultural event in Gujarat where a Chinese delegate, General Zeng, consumes a product called Tiger Soup and unexpectedly dies. This triggers an investigation led by CBI officers Sharma and Gupta, who trace the product back to its original manufacturer, Raghuvir "Raghu" Mehta. Under interrogation, Raghu recounts his journey through a flashback.
Raghu's Struggles and Journey to China
Raghu is a failed entrepreneur struggling to find a successful business venture. Despite inheriting his late father’s mattress business, he faces consistent losses. Encouraged by his uncle, he joins his cousin Devraj on a business trip to China, hoping to find investors for a sports drink idea. However, the plan fails when investor Tanmay rejects their proposal. Devraj abandons Raghu in China, leaving him to explore new opportunities on his own.
The Discovery of Tiger Soup
While in China, Raghu befriends Tanmay, who teaches him the principles of entrepreneurship. During a drunken night, he meets Xui Lee, who introduces him to her boss, Hao Li. Hao introduces Raghu to Tiger Penis Soup, a Chinese herbal product marketed as an aphrodisiac. Hao suggests that selling this product in India could be highly profitable due to the cultural stigma surrounding sexual health.
Launching the Business in India
Raghu returns to India and conducts market research, realizing that genuine solutions for male sexual problems are scarce. He approaches Dr. Tribhuvan Vardhi, a sexologist whose books have inspired him, to collaborate on the product. Initially hesitant, Vardhi agrees after Raghu convinces him of the positive impact on public health awareness.
Growth and Challenges
With a team of young professionals, Raghu begins manufacturing and distributing Tiger Soup. His partnership with Vardhi proves successful when an accidental mix-up at a seminar leads to viral publicity. Sales skyrocket, making Raghu a successful entrepreneur. However, he hides the true nature of his business from his family, who believe he is running a fan business.
Conflict and Betrayal
Trouble arises when Raghu’s cousin Devraj discovers the truth and exposes him to the family. The revelation creates friction between Raghu and his wife, Rukmini. Their son Chintu is expelled from school when a bottle of Tiger Soup is found in his bag. A furious Rukmini confronts Raghu, leading him to question his decisions. However, a motivational call from Tanmay reignites his confidence.
Investigation and Resolution
In the present, Raghu and Vardhi face a government investigation regarding General Zeng’s death. Raghu reveals that Tiger Soup is just rabdi (an Indian dessert) with a placebo effect. Vardhi argues that most sexual issues are psychological and urges the authorities to normalize discussions about sex. Despite political pressure from China, the commission temporarily bans the product but does not shut down the business entirely.
Box Office Performance
Made in China had a slow start at the box office. It collected ₹90 lakhs on its opening day, followed by ₹1.25 crore on the second day and ₹90 lakhs on the third day. The opening weekend total stood at ₹3.05 crore. By 17 November 2019, the film had grossed ₹11.46 crore domestically and ₹1.35 crore internationally, totaling ₹12.81 crore worldwide.
Music
The film’s music was composed by Sachin–Jigar, with lyrics by Vayu, Jigar Saraiya, Priya Saraiya, and Niren Bhatt. The soundtrack included three adapted songs:
*"Odhani" and "Sanedo," inspired by traditional Gujarati folk songs.
*"Naari Naari," adapted from the popular Arabic song Habibi Dah (Nari Narain).
