Bhediya (2022) is an Indian Hindi-language comedy horror film directed by Amar Kaushik. Produced by Dinesh Vijan, the movie is part of the Maddock Supernatural Universe. The film stars Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Abhishek Banerjee, Deepak Dobriyal, and Paalin Kabak. The plot is inspired by Arunachal Pradesh folklore about a shape-shifting werewolf known as Yapum, who protects the jungle.
Storyline
*The Beginning
Bhaskar Sharma (Varun Dhawan) is a road contractor assigned to a project in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh. He is accompanied by his cousin, Janardan "JD" (Abhishek Banerjee). The duo meets Jomin (Paalin Kabak) and Panda (Deepak Dobriyal), who guide them through the area.
The locals strongly oppose cutting down trees for road construction. One night, Bhaskar is bitten by a wolf in the forest. He is taken to veterinarian Anika (Kriti Sanon), who treats him.
*Bhaskar's Transformation
Soon, Bhaskar starts experiencing strange changes in his body. His senses of smell and hearing are heightened. He can understand animal language. Mysterious deaths occur in the village, with victims bearing deep bite wounds.
Panda claims that these are the doings of a werewolf. As Bhaskar pieces things together, he realizes that he himself is responsible for the killings. Every night, he transforms into a werewolf unconsciously.
*The Hunt for the Cure
JD and Jomin attempt to help Bhaskar control his transformations. Meanwhile, a local police officer discovers the truth. Before he can reveal Bhaskar's identity, the same wolf that bit Bhaskar kills him.
The group seeks a shaman's advice. He explains that Bhaskar can only be cured if bitten by the same wolf again on a new moon night in the same location.
*The Revelation
Bhaskar, JD, and Jomin return to the forest. The werewolf reappears and is revealed to be Anika. She explains that she was bitten a century ago and became the protector of the jungle. She spares Bhaskar as she sees his kindness.
Anika is later captured by the police, and Bhaskar, now fully transformed, rescues her. Unfortunately, she is shot and falls off a cliff, dying in front of him. Devastated, Bhaskar decides to protect the forest and halt deforestation plans.
*Ending and Mid-Credit Scene
The authorities cancel the road project after continued attacks by mysterious animals. In the mid-credit scene, JD's friends Vicky and Bittu arrive, revealing that JD is actually Jana from Stree (2018). The movie hints at a crossover between Bhediya and Stree.
